How Teen Therapy Works
Your adolescent’s life doesn’t look the way they want it to.
Firstly, your assigned therapist will have an initial intake session with you as the caregiver to gather background information, discuss your concerns, and understand your goals for your teen's therapy. This session is confidential and ensures that we start off on the right foot with a clear understanding of your family's needs.
During the next session, your teen will meet with the therapist for their assessment and intake session. This is a private session where the therapist will start get to know your teen, their thoughts, challenges, and strengths. It's designed to build rapport and create a safe space for your teen to express themselves openly. The therapist will use this time to explain to your teen about the therapeutic relationship, what to expect from the therapist, what is expected from them, review confidentiality and provide space for any questions your teen may have.
Follow up sessions are then scheduled based on need, but typically weekly to start. These sessions focus on the specific issues your teen is facing, such as school pressures, racing thoughts, social media challenges, feeling misunderstood or whatever appears to be impacting their mental health. Together, the therapist and your teen will work on challenging negative thoughts, developing coping strategies, and exploring activities that bring them joy and fulfillment. This might involve mindfulness exercises, relaxation techniques, or creative outlets that resonate with your teen's interests.
Confidentiality is a top priority at Your Story Rewritten, PLLC, especially when working with teens. While parents legally have access to their minor’s medical records, we highly value your teen's privacy. At Your Story Rewritten, we recognize that family and the caregiver-child relationship are crucial to the teen’s success. Therefore, if situations arise involving risks to themselves or others, or if disclosures are important for parents to understand their teen better, parents will be informed and invited to participate in their teen’s care. Your teen’s well-being and progress are our utmost concern.
Our approach encourages teens to learn to own and rewrite their own story, empowering them to navigate challenges, build resilience, and foster personal growth. Our therapists believe in creating a supportive environment where teens can explore their experiences, develop coping strategies, and ultimately shape their own narrative towards a positive future.
